I'm not used to writing about myself here on TUAW. I'm usually not the story, but just this once we thought it would be appropriate to break with tradition. After 3.5 years here at TUAW (here's my first post), and serving as lead blogger for a good portion of that time, I will be moving on to other things (perhaps bigger, if I'm lucky, but it is hard to think that they will be better. If they are just as good I'll count myself as a lucky fellow indeed).
TUAW's destiny is now in the very capable hands of Dave Caolo and Mike Rose. TUAW will continue to grow by leaps and bounds under their leadership, and it will bring you all the great tips, tricks, and Mac news you have come to expect.
Read on for more of this treacly goodbye post.

Publisher ngmoco, the recently founded iPhone exclusive publisher headed by former EA vet Neil Young, has announced that it has secured a round of funding from venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins, the investor group behind Apple's $100 million iFund to seed third party iPhone development. Former EA CCO Bing Gordon recently announced he had joined the firm as partner. With the ngmoco funding, Gordon will also become a member of the publisher's board. No other ...
iPhone Push Notification API released to select developers
CrunchGear notes that a version of the iPhone Push Notification Service API has been released to "a handful" of developers, and, according to them, will "surely" be released to everyone when iPhone OS 2.1 is released.
If you remember our WWDC keynote coverage (around 11:05 a.m.), the Push Notification Service maintains a connection with third party servers to alert you via an icon badge, custom sounds, or text alerts.
An app that uses this feature isn't really running in the background, but instead sort of registering itself with a metaphorical "hotel operator" that lives in your phone. Once there's something new to tell you, the hotel operator notifies you.
Hopefully this has little effect on battery life, but without actual, real-world use, it's hard to say.

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Software, Freeware, Apple, iPhone, App Store
A few App Store apps have already gotten the public browbeating for tweaking their prices, and here's another: as Johnathan notes, there's a new app on the top of the heap in the paid pile, and apparently the only reason "Units Convertor" (sic) is there is because it used to be free.We can't necessarily call them out for switching just to sit on top -- what would you do if you had a free app that was being downloaded like crazy and decided you wanted to make some money from it? But being that free apps far outweigh paid apps in terms of distribution, even the #21 free app can quickly jump to the top of the paid pile. We've already posted about how developers might be getting a raw deal out of the App Store (and some publishers have told us personally that they agree), but the economics are very interesting in there right now -- you've got a basically free economy, and considering th at most of the apps out now are easy to make, it's just as likely that you'll see a free version of an app that does the same thing as a paid app.
Of course, what's happening in there actually mirrors what's happening out here with software: some of the best applications around are actually being given away for free. We're still in a strange place with the App Store and its pricing, and you have to think that eventually things will settle down and the developers who deserve to get paid will.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

AT&T takes wraps off Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone 3G, price hike included at no extra charge
Filed under: Messaging, ATT, Apple
Just like the original, AT&T now has a so-called TAP (Text Accessibility Plan) all set up for the iPhone 3G that'll offer unlimited messaging and data to folks with disabilities. Interested parties do need to fill out a qualification form, meaning that your average able-bodied customer isn't going to be able to get in on the service -- and unfortunately, it's undergone the same $10 facelift that the regular plans have suffered, meaning subscribers will now be paying $50 a month ($65 for enterprise use) instead of the $40 that was being charged previously. By the way, we're shaking our fists at the heavens right now, cursing inflation, market forces, and corporate greed.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments [ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

AT&T updates iPhone plan for hearing-impaired
Filed under: iPhone
Back in April we noted that AT&T was offering a Text Accessibility Plan for hearing-impaired customers that offered unlimited SMS and data for $40 per month. Now that the 3G iPhone is out, the plans have been updated. Original iPhone customers can still get it for $40, but the 3G crowd is going to have to pony up another Hamilton, bringing the total to $50 per month (Enterprise customers can get the plan for $65). Both plans charge 40 cents per minute for voice calls and include Visual Voicemail. To be eligible for the plans customers have to complete AT&T's disability certification forms (PDF link). These plans are apparently only available on the iPhone.

Paragon software has made available a pre-release version of Camp Tune, a new utility for resizing your Boot Camp partition without destroying data. While the Leopard version of Disk Utility is now able to perform partition resizing, it is not able to resize a Boot Camp partition without erasing it (although you could back it up and restore it if needed). Camp Tune runs as a bootable Linux-based CD which allows you to boot your Mac and reallocate disk space between your Boot Camp and HFS partition.Camp Tune for Mac is presently in pre-release and is being offered as a free download (registration required). The download is a disk image that must be burned to a CD or DVD. Needless to say, you should have a backup for both partitions before using any software of this sort.

Dear Auntie TUAW: Is My 2.0 iPhone Slow and Buggy?
Dear Auntie TUAW,
I've been looking to see if there was a post about this, but have people been noticing that the 2.0 firmware on their original iPhones has made them slow, partially responsive, and more buggy? I'm looking for a way to downgrade mine until they get it figured out. Thanks!
Signed, David C.

John Carmack planning a "graphical tour-de-force" for the iPhone
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Gaming, Software, Developer
Ah, game developers (especially EA game developers, of which id software's John Carmack is now one, after their announcement at E3 that they'd work together to publish games). They thrive on hype, and live, it seems sometimes, off of speculation. That's probably why Carmack has told Forbes that not only does he love his iPhone, and not only does he not want to "announce anything specifically," but id wants to mak e a game for the iPhone and "it would be," according to Carmack, "a graphical tour de force." See what we mean? Ah, game developers.Anna Kang, who's the president of id Mobile (no relation), says that any id game they might be working on for the iPhone wouldn't be a new IP, so that puts it very much in the range of a Doom, Wolfenstein, or Quake game, and considering that another Wolfenstein sequel is being worked on right now, that probably makes it the most likely.
For his part, Carmack sounds really excited to have the iPhone as a platform (especially since he hasn't always seen eye-to-eye with Apple) -- he equates it in terms of power to a PS2 or Xbox, and says that a company could easily shell out $10 m illion on an iPhone game, be it a first person shooter or a deep MMORPG. But he admits that the 99-cent sales in the App Store can't support that yet, and it probably wouldn't be the best thing for id Mobile to pour their resources into something like that quite yet. Nevertheless, we'll wait and see what they come up with.

Video: Blackberry KickStart 8220 flip
Sure, you've read the KickStart 8220 preview and seen plenty of snaps, but video is still the only way to demonstrate some features of a device. Especially when it's not yet available in shops. Fortunately, Kevin Michaluk over at CrackBerry put together almost 9-minutes of moving pictures demonstrating two-handed Suretype thumbing, the 8220's more deeply inset trackball, and slick OS 4.6 action. He even went head-to-head with the iPhone 3G to demonstrate the KickStart's Internet browser. But enough with the words eh, video after the break.Continue reading Video: Blackberry KickStart 8220 flip
