Third iPhone software SIM unlock team claims September 1st release
The two big teams claiming iPhone software SIM unlock solutions (iPhoneSIMfree and UniquePhones) have been a bit mum of late, but while iPhoneSIMfree's hack is supposedly due by tomorrow, if you're the type to believe the hype you read on internet forums, then you just might have a free (as in beer) alternative. Unknowns the Deathcorp team claim tomorrow September 1st will also mark the wide public release of their iPhone SIM unlock software, which is supposedly going to be distributed with no charge to you. As usual, we'll be there to sort the fact from the fiction.[Thanks, Ed]

Autoblog Green Podcast #11
Filed under: Hybrid, GM, Podcasts, Frankfurt Motor Show, HCCI
As we head toward the Frankfurt Motor show, AutoblogGreen Podcast #11 is filled with talk about what we'll see at the show. There've been lots of developments from European manufacturers, and we're eager to see those cars up close. Sam also got the chance to attend a GM Powertrain event at their Milford proving grounds where he was able to drive some of the new engine technologies around, including HCCI. While there, he a lso snagged interviews with Paul Najt and Uwe Grebe talking about the work they've been doing developing new GM powertrains. It's 36 minutes this week, and we've fixed the RSS and audio issues from the last couple episodes. Thanks for listening!SUBSCRIBE to the AutoblogGreen Podcast in iTunes

The 2008 iPhone display? Sharp's next gen multi-touch LCD revealed
Filed under: Displays
Want to see the glass behind the iPhone's multi-touch panel? Well this ain't it, it's better. Sharp -- one of Apple's iPhone panel providers -- just unveiled their newest 3.5-inch, 320 x 480 pixel resolution multi-touch panel which does what its predecessor did in just half the thickness. The new 1-mm depth was achieved by integrating the photodetector into each pixel while incorporating scanning functionality for fingerprint authentication or barcode and business card scanning. Right, with the appropriate underlying software of course. Sharp expects to adapt the new technology to multi-touch, glass panels as large as 12.1-inches. Sample LCDs will be made available in September before mass production beings in the Spring of 2008.[ Full story from Engadget ]

Hardware unlocked iPhone locked again after update
Filed under: Handsets, Software, Apple
Beware brave hardware unlockers -- and we mean that, you're brave to void warranty and risk handset failure to use the precious -- if your iPhone is at version 1.0 when you start your task updating it to 1.02 may erase all your hard work. Apparently Sergeij2000 over at the Hackint0sh discovered this the hard way while upgrading his unlocked iPhone and had to unlock it once again -- though he does mention that the modem did seem to stay unlocked. We expect the same will hold true for the software unlocks once rolled out -- and likely TurboSIM as well -- but hopefully a few clever solutions will appear to save us from the vicious circle we're bound to spiral into. Our only bit of advice for the short term is to let new updates soak for a few days letting the early adopters take the brunt of the grief.[ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

iPod gets local nuisance to pipe down
Every urban neighborhood has its characters and unique personalities that add to the flavor of the place. In Sunset Park, Brooklyn, where I live now, the accordion guy who plays Spanish folk tunes near the subway is a fixture, and he gives a friendly nod or a "Buenos Diaz" every morning. Back in the old 'hood -- Park Slope, PRB (people's republic of Brooklyn) -- one of the local folks has apparently been contributing a rather bitter taste. The New York Times City Room blog tells the story of the Park Slope sidewalk ranter, a dedicated Mets fan who, from his seat in front of a deli, would harangue passing Yankees fans with racial epithets and slurs. Nothing seemed to quiet this guy down. Nothing, that is, until a distinctive pair of white earbuds appeared... and now there is peace and quiet.
Only in New York. At least, for the sake of everyplace else on earth, I hope that it's only in New York.

Keynote bug: Spontaneous reboots
Despite Keynote's maturity, a significant bug remains. Several users are reporting that pressing the "Play" button after composing a project causes the machine to immediately reboot. From what's been reported so far, it seems to be limited to laptops, specifically iBooks and MacBooks, with and without an external monitor attached. At this point, no fix has been found.
Have any of you experienced this problem? Can you lend a hand in the troubleshooting?

Migrating to a new Mac - say hello to a Mac Switcher
Filed under: Switchers, Productivity, Reviews
Well, what better way to introduce myself but to sing the praises of the almighty Mac! I'm Jason Clarke, and I'm brand new to TUAW, although I've been writing over on sister-site Download Squad for a couple of years now. I was also briefly the lead blogger for The Unofficial Microsoft Weblog, until it was rolled into Download Squad. Despite my checkered past, this post is going to be me preaching to the choir, so consider yourself warned.Today was a very happy day for me, because my MacBook Pro that I've been eagerly anticipating arrived. I've been a very happy Mac user since I received my first MacBook, about 4 months ago. Now, receiving a new primary computer for me has always been somewhat bittersweet; the excitement of the new machine is always offset by the pain of migrating from the old one.
When migrating from and old to a new Windows machine, I would always plan for two days of hell, followed by two weeks of minor (and sometimes major) aggravation when some utility that I needed in that moment had yet to be installed or configured. I had heard that Macs have a migration assistant, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. Find out what happened (as if you don't already know) after the jump.

Vodafone Germany surprises with its own visual mailbox
Filed under: Handsets, Messaging, Software, Vodafone
While not the same as the iPhone's visual voicemail, we're pretty sure Vodafone Germany subscribers will be happy to check this out. When new voicemail messages arrive, they are dropped on the handset via MMS as an audio clip. Users can then listen to their voicemail on the handset by simply clicking the user's message they are not screening interested in hearing. This free service is available now for all Vodafone contract subscribers, with CallYa customers getting it this fall. Who said good things don't come for free?[ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

Yeah, about that Nokia iPhone -- they were trying to demo touchscreen Symbian S60
Filed under: Software, Nokia, Symbian, Apple
So yeah, we talked to Nokia today about that iPhone knockoff of theirs. Turns out they totally neglected to mention that they were trying to show off the iPhone-esque software, not the iPhone-esque hardware. The concept they were driving at is they want to take Symbian S60 into the wonderful world of touchscreen, and that kind of input system they demoed could show up on any form factor device. Why they decided to show off said S60 touchscreen software on a total ripoff of the iPhone (and not, say, on some mockup N-series device) is a little less clear, but it certainly made for some hilarious fodder this morning. Seriously though, don't forget to check the video, you can almost hear the soothing sounds of the iPhone ad mandolin playing.[ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]
NFL and DirecTV partner on streaming games
Filed under: Home Entertainment
You can now watch NFL football over the interwebs, free from regional restrictions! Excited? We thought so -- here's what you'll need. First, sign up for DirecTV's Sunday Ticket ($269/year). Second, add in the "SuperFan" program (an additional $99/year). Third, you'll need a Windows PC (sorry Mac users). Once all that is squared away, you can enjoy watching live games webwide in Internet Explorer. Meh, says we, especiall y when you look at MLB.TV. Admittedly, the SuperFan package is required for HD delivery of the games on DirecTV anyways (which the internet feed definitely won't be), so chances are that football nuts may already have these packages lined up. The NFL is keeping tight control over their content, but this is a step in the right direction. Meanwhile, "misplacing" a Slingbox at your buddy's place in another region is looking better and better.

SCPlugin: Subversion client plugin for the Finder
Filed under: Software, Developer

Most developers these days use a version control system to keep track of changes in their code, and Subversion is probably the most popular. While there are some slick Mac clients available, some folks have wanted a solution that integrates with the Finder like the Windows client TortoiseSVN integrates with the Windows shell and the SCPlugin brings exactly that. While they still have some features on the wish list (e.g. repository browsing), the developers think the newly released version 0.7 is "ready to be your one-and-only Subversion interface." It offers contextual menu control for common operations as well as icon badging to help you see file status visually.
