All about Apple and Mii

We've been hearing scattered reports some that newly-christened iPhone owners are having a heck of a time finalizing the activation process in iTunes. That sucks for a couple reasons: first, these puppies are darned near useless without being activated, and second, it seems the procedure is hanging after the point at which existing customers' current SIMs are deactivated. So yeah, long story short, there's a few people out there left phoneless while AT&T gets its act together, which it's been said may not be until morning. Burnin' the midnight oil over there, O Masters of Activation?&n bsp;

So maybe, contrary to previous reports, you will be able to swap out that SIM card on your iPhone. Although, with all things Apple, they would prefer you only use what they give you. The official word is "Other SIM cards may not work." Most AT&T cards will probably work.Filed under: Cellphones
You've already seen bits and pieces of this morning's Today Show, but another segment in the broadcast managed to grab a trip inside Microsoft's Mobile Design Lab where engineers and "audio geeks" look to be hard at work as they try to "redefine cool." Notably, the video fails to show any undercover shots of prototype mobiles that Microsoft may have up its sleeve, and it seemed that this "sneak peek" was intentionally devoid of innovation (secrets we can't know about?). Nevertheless, we do get a chance to see dedicated ringtone makers, and while it's already understood, any future mobiles coming out of Redmond will reportedly attempt to cram "as much of your PC into your cellphone as possible." Best of all, however, is the aptly-dubbed isolation room, which left the interviewer grumbling over how tough it was to peck out an email on the tiny keys of his smartphone. And whether you want to believe it or not, Robbie Bach was seen stating that the iPhone "doesn't change Microsoft's strategy nor its approach."

As often happens with new and fantastic technology products with a lot of hype associated with them get released, someone immediately wants to take them apart to see what's inside. Such is the case at iFixit where they have begun the disassembly process on a new iPhone. Filed under: Culture, Handsets, Messaging, Multimedia, Others, Windows Mobile

Despite the fact that preorders weren't accepted for the iPhone -- at least not in any official capacity -- we've been tipped that at least one possibly unscrupulous AT&T location in Little Rock, Arkansas has told campers that they've already sold out of units. So if there wasn't any preorder, where'd they go? To Premier customers who... um, preordered, allegedly. Folks in line were informed that they were more than welcome to come back this evening and pay for the unit they can't have, at which point they'd be shipped out next week. Something smell fishy here?

When your open-source project is the focus of a New York Times article, that's a big news day for you (at least it would be if not for those meddling kids in line to buy iPhones). Thursday's NYT article discussing the technical hurdles, legal haziness and other challenges to ripping DVDs for personal use leads off with the example of HandBrake dev lead Eric Petit ('titer') using his very own tool to convert a movie so it'll play on his PSP. The article goes on to mention VisualHub and VideoLan, and quickly dives into an acronym soup of MP4, OGG, AVI and more.Filed under: Tips and tricks, iPhone
Apple loves them their videos: first the iPhone Guided Tour, then the Keyboard video, and now ten separate, easy-to-digest videos -- cleverly titled "Finger Tips" -- demonstrating various iPhone functions and offering some pointers to make good use of your new multi-touch monster. Tips include:
Every week, the Japanese iTunes store updates later than the stores for the rest of the world. Because of this, the iTunes Single of the Week for Japan lags behind other countries. Sorry about taking so long this week to get around to posting this update. It's been iPhone crazy. Here (finally) is this week's offering.

After a short delay, we're back with another installment of the Joystiq podcast, marking our first double digit show (about time!). This episode we're joined by Chris Remo, editor-in-chief of Shacknews, who tells us about his time spent with Valve's latest treats and sticks around to go over the rest of the week in gaming news, including Banhunt 2.Filed under: Handsets, Software, ATT, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, Apple, OS X
The kids over at ThinkSecret have some exclusive pics of what they purport to be interface shots of the iPhone. In these, we clearly see an RSS view thanks to the reader.mac.com URL, a previously unseen SIM loading procedure (requiring a paperclip), and what appears to be an Exchange email configuration tab. TS says that the iPhone supports Microsoft Exchange servers and has likely licensed Microsoft's ActiveSync. The latter dealio we've heard before and is certainly making corporate IT departments a bit fidgety. After all, more than a few CEOs will be demanding integration of their new toys come Monday morning. Jobs himself responded to a USA Today question about the lack of corporate email support with, "You'll be hearing more about this in the coming weeks. We have some pilots going with companies with names you'll recognize. This won't be a big issue." The fact that most of these pictures still sport the old Cingular logo certainly doesn't give us much confidence for an "iDay" release.[ Full story from Engadget Mobile ]

Samurai Shodown II leads the pack in the first of what will be a weekly institution here on Joystiq -- GameTap release notices. There are a slew of great releases every week for the all-you-can-eat PC (and as of today, Mac) gaming service and seeing as how the Wii and Xbox 360 get their share of love, we think it's high time GameTap got theirs as well.
