Garmin finally releases POI loader and WebUpdater
Filed under: Software, Odds and ends, Beta Beat
We've posted before about GPS maker Garmin's rather tortured relationship to its Mac customers, only delivering Mac compatible software a long time after promised (Training Center) or not at all (MapSource). However, it looks like things are getting better. After finally delivering Training Center back in January, Garmin has now graced us with two new M ac betas. The POI Loader "allows you to load custom points of interest into your unit" from your Mac. And the WebUpdater for Mac lets you update the firmware in your Garmin GPS device. Now if they'd finally get MapSource on the Mac, we might consider cutting them some slack. Thanks, Mike!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
HoudahGeo geocoding with Google Earth integration
Filed under: Multimedia, Software, Beta Beat

We have posted about several differing geocoding solutions for the Mac. All of these programs allow you to embed location information in the EXIF data of your photographs, thus specifying where the photo was taken as well as the time, date, etc. The newest entry into the Mac geocoding sweepstakes is Houda Geo, which has just been released as a public beta. Like some of the others, it allows you to tag your photos either by importing tracking data from a GPS device (syncing using the time stamps) or by using an interface with Google Maps. Once the photos have been tagged you can export them to Google Earth with a single click:

HoudaGeo is a free download while it's in beta but will eventually be shareware.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tumblr now has Dashboard widgets, Quicksilver add-on
Filed under: Software, Blogging, Internet Tools
Tumblr is a unique new tumblelog service that employs a KISS philosophy: offering a very streamlined, one-column layout and a clever bookmarklet that is smart about what you're trying to share on your Tumblr blog. While the minimalist templates can be edited by hand to include just about anything you want, Tumblr's concept is to be a sort of blogging scrapbook; a place to toss all those unique things you find across the web that might not fit at any of your other blogging venues, or that you simply don't have much to say about. Take a look at the Tumblr Radar to get an idea of how others are using the service. Now that introductions are out of the way, a recent update to Tumblr, as well as a how-to post from our sister Download Squad blog, has highlighted some Mac OS X-specific features that should make it even easier for Mac users to jump into the service.
First, Alex Hung (Windows developer for ecto, by the way) wrote up a great how-to at Download Squad that explores the construction of a Tumblr Dashboard widget with Apple's Dashcode. A DLS reader was even inspired enough to go through with it, creating theTumblr Widget that is hosted on Google Code. This widget also became one of two that Tumblr just highlighted in a recent blog post, with the other being more of a basic test widget that Tumblr cooked up themselves.
The second Mac Tumblr tool is an AppleScript for Quicksilver by Andrew Lilja. Andrew provides the AppleScript code and instructions for some unique syntax you can use to specify things like titles, quotes and links for your Tumblr posts, all from Quicksilver's handy UI.
It's great to see these kinds of tools appear for Tumblr, as it makes an already simple service even easier to use.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ask WoW Insider: How's WoW performance on a Mac?
Today's Ask WoW Insider brings us a corollary question to our WoW performance on Vista inquiry from a couple of months ago; Rotmeyer writes: I play Wow on a PC, and am looking towards a new computer purchase. One thing that influences my purchase is how well WoW will run on my new computer. I'm leaning towards a Mac, but how well does WoW run on a Mac? What's the minimum Mac requirements for smooth framerate and gameplay? Could I play WoW on a Mac Mini? Thanks.Without getting derailed i nto Yet Another Platform War, can anyone give Rotmeyer some advice or share your experiences running the WoW client on a Mac? Be as specific about the model and specs of your machine(s) as possible.

Apple iPhone release on June 11?
According to CNET, Cingular [aka, the new AT&T] has "confirmed" June 11 as the release date for Apple's iPhone. Keep in mind that confirmation in this case is unofficial as it supposedly comes from a front-line sales support person. See, after a call to Cingular's customer service, CNET was transfered to sales where they were told of the magical date. Of course, all this makes perfect sense as the 11th also marks the kickoff of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference where Steve and Co are always keen to announce new wares.[Thanks, Adam]

Cingular says June 11 is iPhone Day
My fellow Carnegie Mellon alum Declan McCullagh (go Tartans!) has a unique investigative style: when he wants to find out a product release date, he calls customer service and asks someone. Genius, I say! In this case, he called AT&T/Cingular and spoke to a sales manager who confirmed an on-sale date for the iPhone of June 11, 2007. The alert reader will note that Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference also starts on June 11. Coincidence? Uh, survey says no.What's that noise I hear... is tha t the sound of millions of customers checking the contract expiration dates for their current cellphone service? Sounds like gophers.
Thanks Marcus!

APC reports Office 2008 in private beta
Happy Friday everyone! From Down Under it emerges (via APC, the Aussie computer magazine): a preview article on Office 2008, including the tempting tidbit that the suite is now in private beta, with the 'Escher' graphics engine and plenty of shiny bits. MBU managers also admit that the initial attempts at a new, more Windows-ish interface for the Mac productivity suite met with blank stares and frustration:"[T]he Mac d evelopers had already had one radical redesign tested and rejected after user feedback, said MacBU group product manager Mary Starman. 'We had what we thought was going to be this perfect UI solution, and the first time we put it in the labs, no-one understood it! It was so different they were completely confused!'"
I don't know whether to be happy that they listened to the test groups, or discouraged that they were surprised when a radical UI change caused user confusion. *sigh* Check out the full APC article for screenshots and more.

Dell finds evidence of accounting errors and misconduct
Filed under: Desktops, Laptops
RuRow Raggy -- in a wee-hour, tail-between-the-legs announcement, Dell just admitted financial "accounting errors" and "evidence of misconduct." This, after a months-long, independent review by the company's internal audit committee which, incidentally has yet to complete. It's not clear if any of this will require the restatement of previous earnings reports although second, third and fourth quarter statements from Dell all remain preliminary and have yet to be filed with the SEC. An analyst said to have spoken to Dell's management about the matter in "general terms" calls the situation "serious" but "not life threatening" to Dell. However, we'd feel a bit better if s/he had talked to the SEC instead. After all, they've been probing Dell's financials since August of 2005. It's also not clear if the alleged Intel kickbacks play any role in the matter. However, the resignations of both Dell's former CFO and Kevin Rollins (former CEO) in recent months is starting to look suspiciously familiar. Hey, welcome back Michael, aren't you glad you came?[Thanks, LordFarkward]

Today's franchise face-offiest game video: Bauer versus Riker
Filed under: Culture, Hacks, Retro, Action, Fighting, Video

It's Riker versus Bauer in tonight's video pick. (What, you thought we'd post about that other video again?) Through the magic of editing -- and a rocking soundtrack -- these two leaders face off in a game of Str eet Fighter. Bauer uses his ability to multitask to get Gamefaqs tips, while beardless Riker has only his grimace and guile. This YTMND mash-up loops soon after it starts, but the quick editing is dense with detail; we laughed through several repetitions.
The video isn't embedable, so you'll have to venture into the dangerous tubes beyond Joystiq. But be sure to come back to tell us what you think.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Organizing your Desktop with file wells
Uncluttering your life and Getting Things Done is a perennial favorite among us TUAW folks, and MurphyMac has posted a new video showing a novel way to take charge of your Mac desktop. Creating a custom desktop helps organize your workspace around your workflow. You build a background in your favorite image editor to match the size of your desk, adding organizing "wells" to store different file classes (like incoming, action items, items-to-file, and so forth). By setting this as your desktop, you instantly add a new level of order to your workspace and can take advantage of the structures you design into the background. It's not rocket science, but it's a great idea for adding structure while preserving the visibility you lose with a folder system.

Iomega announces Power Pro Desktop Hard Drive with 2TB of storage
Filed under: Storage
If your current drives are just stuffed the the gills with 10 megapixel photos you never resized and episodes of Still Standing that you forgot to erase, Iomega's got a new RAID array that'll bulk up your storage by two terabytes and let you continue living your carefree, digital pack rat lifestyle. With four independent, lockable 500GB drives, though, you could just as easily shift the Power Pro Desktop Hard Drive into RAID 1 and make sure that your 1TB of never-used files are doubly secure; RAID status plus free space, fan speed, and temperature are all displayed on the built-in LED. Connectivity options are also plentiful here, with the PPDHD offering both the 400 and 800 flavors of Firewire and, of course, USB 2.0 as well. Mac and Windows compatible, this one will set you back $1,700 when it hits on April 10th.[Via Macworld]

Indie Mac title Return to Dark Castle still hasn't returned
Filed under: Mac, Retro, Action, Adventure, RPGs, Casual
Indie Mac developer Delta Tao, whose website had languished without update for nine months, broke their silence this week to announce three small price drops for Spaceward Ho!, Clan Lord, and Eric's Ultimate Solitaire. But the real news still isn't on their official site. Rumor has it that Return to Dark Castle, in development for seven years, is finally done. For now, the game remains in limbo, awaiting negotiations between Delta Tao and current Dark Castle rights-holder Super Happy Fun Fun. (That's the game company owned by Ren & Stimpy, right?) How long will the licensing talks last? Hopefully not as long as development did.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wrappers Custom MacBook (Pro) Sleeves
If having a MacBook (Pro) is not enough to stand out from the crowd, a Wrapper may be just the ticket. These are sleeves for MacBooks and MacBook Pros 15 and 17 which can be customized as you see above. They're able to embroider more less whatever lettering you want on a variety of different color cases. In addition to the custom sleeves, they offer plain sleeves in several different fabrics like denim, corduroy, and even camo.
The prices seem reasonable considering the customization, starting around £17.99 plus £3.50 p&p (~$42) for the MacBook model.
Thanks Debbie!
